I suspect this is mostly down to your email client and how it renders what would be an image that cannot be downloaded. It won't be able to download the image due to permissions (we don't allow guest attachment views here and your email client won't be logged into the forum).
Most browsers would show some sort of placeholder or a clearer indication that the image could not be loaded.
Webmail clients would generally load the image without issue because you'd likely be using the same browser which is already logged into the forum.
