At last! DPreview.com moving to Xenforo

Doesn’t Discourse have a hybrid approach that keeps sub threads readable but also adds the new message to the end of the main thread?

I always thought that was kind of cool, I’ve not used a discourse forum heavily enough to know how good it really is in practice though.
Yes but it looks terrible.
Vertical scope have done this to all forum software and it looks bad.
Even proboards has it.

That's easy to fix:
That's not actually a viable solution because conversely to those who are somewhat loud about the loss of threaded view, there's another bunch who are very happy that everything is in flat view, which was a preference in the previous software.

Most of you will understand from your own imports and migrations to XenForo that there's always going to be a loud minority who are averse to change. Most will get used to it and adapt.

DPR will continue to assess feedback and consider adding a threaded option back if it's deemed appropriate.

Why not allow an option between the 2 "modes" for the Xenforo software? Seems like good interest on both sides of the coin.

A migration will always cause a stir. After the dust settles it will be clear how big of an issue missed features really are.
This is why my crew always make the choice of using Xenforo over some free software.
We think it's miles better than some of the others out there.
We've had proboards, vBulletin, smf, phpbb, ipb and xenforo.
If we wanted free we would have stayed with smf.

why would they restrict the forum searching to such a degree ?

if you are logged in are there better options ?

it's made worse by this original search menu ... which works OK for the reviews, but not the forum.

The forum needs a prominent search area like this:
1762806057843.webp

They buried the forum search here:

1762806122927.webp

People can't find it.

That might be adsense running in "auto ads" mode and they have yet to configure it to not decimate their new XF layout. I've seen auto-ads dump adverts in all kinds of weird places if you don't try to reign it in a little.

I'm impressed. It's clearly still a work-in-progress while they are finding their feet with the software. But so far, it's looking very good. Of course, my 15 years of experience with xf software means that my familiarity might be clouding my judgement some.

Also 50m posts and it's zipping along nicely on the XF Hardware. A good advert for xf hosting

Given the size of the DPreview forums and the amount of huge pictures in there I would be curious about the backup strategie of them as well as of XF-Cloud in general. Either way the migration and the DPreview forums could be a nice showcase to tell for XF marketing.

Backups are run twice a day for each site. The database is dumped and a diff of the files produces a snapshot which is then encrypted and hosted off-site. A number of snapshots are retained over a 12 month period so we have good recovery potential for the last couple of days, the last week, the last month, and every month over the last 12.
