Any news about Xenforo 3.0, can we expect modern forum?

Hello. For half a year, I have been looking for a modern forum system to start an anime/manga site with various features. For example, a video system for watching movies/episodes, a way to add manga/anime as pages with information about them, topics with posters, etc. I saw that all of this is possible with Invision Community.

I waited to see version 5, but it turned out that the self-hosted platform is extremely expensive and has functionality limits. They also changed the way we acquire add-ons, significantly restricting options, and almost no themes exist for their latest version.

On the other hand, XenForo seems like a better alternative in terms of user base and price, but the forum and themes, in general, look like they’re from the early 2000s. I understand that some may find this nostalgic, but it looks incredibly outdated and is not visually appealing.

That’s why I’m wondering what exactly to expect with version 3.0. Can we anticipate a modern interface similar to Invision Community? I really don't want to go to invision as they may drop self-hosted in next version, as they aim for big comapanies, not common users now.

I don't understand the complaints around XFs default style not looking "modern". There's a thousand third party themes out there you can buy for a one-time purchase of like $20 if you really want something particular without doing the work yourself.

Most of the issues I mention in my list come up if for those who use addons that introduce new CONTENT TYPES.
OK, gotcha. But they do show in latest Activity, although TBF there's also a lot of stuff like reactions that many people don't want.

But these two seem to contradict:
For example, I have the following content types that do not display in New posts:
  1. Articles
  2. Article comments

New Posts only displays Forum Threads (including THREAD TYPES like Articles)
I also see your lists include blog, products, wiki... Surely those are 3rd party, therefore it's up to the developer to solve those issues????

Latest Activity indeed is convoluted with things that people don't want to see. It's also chaotic visually. Latest Activity doesn't display New Posts. There is no feed of unread content that combines all content.

Just like XFMG has Entries and Comments, this is the same for many addons. It's actually inconsistent that there are no comments for resources.
Articles in Article Management System have Articles and Article comments.

Addon developers can only extend what's already there. We cannot expect them to replace the What's New / Find-new system in core. Nor the navigation menu system. Nor other things that belong to the framework.

Better content discovery:

The latest activity page isn't too far off. If it was filterable, showed all content types and could be ordered as a user chooses, it would be fine. It would also be good if when a user "follows" a node, or content type, you could filter by "content I follow" on latest activity feed. We should be able to create content from this page, and also interact with and reply to existing content.

Additionally, when viewing a media item, say a Space Marine, I should be recommended other Space Marine media items, but also thread posts, article posts, resources, etc as part of the same widget. "Related content" instead of "Related threads".

For those that enjoy learning how things in XF actually work... each individual Content Type can (its optional) implement a NewsFeed Handler, which is used to fetch and display specific content in the Latest Activity Feed (as well as the Your newsfeed, which is the Latest Activity Feed, only fetching content for members that you follow).

I personally implement NewsFeed Handlers for all "social type" content types... example, IMS (Item Management System) implements 9 NewsFeed Handlers. So for example, Member A reacts to a reply to a review posted by Member X, that will be displayed in the Latest Activity Feed.

So IMS will fetch activity related to Items, Item Updates, Replies to Item Updates, Pages (for multi page Items), Questions, Replies to Questions, Reviews, Replies to reviews and Series Items.

All content types have to do this, to include Core XF Content Types. Here you can see that Core XF implements 4 NewsFeed Handlers for Threads, Posts, Profile Posts and Profile Post Comments.

Here you can see that XFMG implements 4 NewsFeed Handlers for Albums, Media Items, Comments and Ratings.

Here you can see that XFRM implements 3 NewsFeed Handlers for Resources, Resource Updates and Resource Ratings.

Anyway... posted for those that enjoy learning :)

But these two seem to contradict:
How exactly do they contradict? Those are two different content types that implement a FindNew Handler. Each Content Type implements its own Content Type Handlers. That is just basic XF development 101. If your addon (like XFMG and AMS) has multiple content types with Read Marking Systems, you implement a FindNew Handler for each of those content types.

I implement FindNew Handlers for all content types that have a read marking system (just as XF does with Threads and XFMG does with Media and Comments and XFRM does with Resources). I have a couple addons that have several FindNew Handlers (Items, Updates, Check-ins, Comments, Questions and Reviews).

AMS implements 2 FindNew Handlers, one for Articles and one for Comments.

Core XF implements 2 FindNew Handlers, one for Threads and one for Profile Posts

XFMG implements 2 FindNew Handlers, one for Media and one for Comments. Gee, look familiar much lol Good Grief!

XFRM implements 1 FindNew Handler, for resources (and this is a fake handler as XFRM does not have read marking for Resources so it fetches Latest Resources).

So ya, those do not contradict in any way shape or form.

I can only speak for one of those you listed (Blogs). UBS implements all core Content Type Handlers, to include both NewsFeed Handlers and FindNew Handlers, just like Core XF, XFRM and XFMG do.

btw, the issues being discussed about Content Discovery are not DEVELOPER (core/3rd party) related. Its System limitation related, mainly with the Whats New System not having a Mixed Content Type results page.

But ya, those damn developers!!! Time to go before I say something to get me banned!

Article threads is a Thread Type that is part of xenforo forum. Because it's a Thread Type the functionality is limited.

Articles in the addon Article Management System are a Content Type and not part of xenforo forum. This is advanced functionality.
This is an amazing addon by @Bob

Article management system is fine on here as it is. You don't need more addons just because you're being overly fussy.
We've seen it work on all Have You Seen? articles that @Chris D posts up.

OK, that wasn’t mentioned. I just thought articles.

But anyway, surely this thread is about xenForo v3 improvements and features, so addons are not so relevant. I ithink I said earlier surely it’s up to 3rd party developers to make their stuff work with xenForo. The xf developers can’t be responsible for those.
