Any Addonchat users?

All things apart, I can actually see chatboxes getting useless with the new XenForo personal conversations... considering you can chat to anyone, with as many people as you like, and yet only with people you invite...

I agree, the last thing I need in addition to watching spammers all the time I am online is another IM chat box to use, but if forum owners want it, all the more power to them, especially if they have members that will pay them for this feature.

A chatbox is not the same as a chatroom... A chatbox is nowhere near as active, its for one or two notes and then people move on. A chatroom however is more of a water cooler situation. Its where people come to schmooze and chat about things that SHOULDN'T be on the forum. The addonchat on my forum is more of the "adults only" section. That doesn't mean its pornographic, just that its where people know they can go and just be themselves; they dont have to worry about pissing people off or looking like an idiot.

Not to mention, my website is video game related... its where people go to find XBL and PSN matchups. Should they be posted on the forums "who wants to play me on XBL, right now". They are liable not to get a good response until they are no longer on XBL. The chatroom however is a place where people can go to see who is available at any given moment. It has it's uses, and it keeps the clutter off the forums. Its so essential for my website that I can't upgrade to XF until Addonchat comes out for it.

Cool man, like I said, if it works for you and helps your community function better I'm all for it, but for old line forums that have been around it is not needed, it never has been.

I'm not against the plug in at all, hell I might use it myself one day, just not on the forums I run today.

What is it that Addonchat has that the 2 chat add-ons which have been developed don't?
Those are chat BOXES, not chat ROOMS...

There is no list of users in the boxes and they cant have multiple rooms... Being able to see who is in the chatroom is essential. With addonchat's VB4 plugin, they had it so that the number of people in the chatroom was displeyed on the navtab itself! "Chat [24]" would be one example. Like I said, the chat room is about finding people... you can't find people if there isn't a user list.

I've tried an ajax chatroom before with Flashchat... and I found that once more than 20 people entered the Flashchat room, my server performance would start crashing. With Addonchat, the chat servers are hosted elsewhere... I've had 68 users in my chatroom and had no lag on my website or the chatroom. Yes, I know I can do this with a regular IRC channel and a mibbit embed, but that doesn't permit remote authentication... Addonchat does.

The only problem with Addonchat, besides the cost, is the requirement for Java... but I haven't found a solution as good as Addonchat.

I have ajax chat on my site now which is very similar to those add-ons, the difference is though the users are listed and also whether they've been active in the last 5 minutes or are idle.
I've had up to 50 people at once with no problems at all.

Horses for courses though, I have no need of multiple rooms so a simple chat add-on will do for me.

A chat box is a very simply limited solution, whereas a chat room is the full array of functions.
Often there also is a matter of quality. Check the source of the forum pages with a chatbox on it. With several chat boxes its not pretty.

I have compiled an overview of chat applications:

In contrast to what many people think about chat rooms, its my experience that (if applied well) it can increase forum activity. Its not true that suddenly all forum members will choose chat over forum and your forum suffers. Quite the contrary. But you need to guide it.

Chris from Addonchat told me he plans to have the beta running on test sites (8WR will be one of them!) after the new years. Its christmas, give them a break!

Don't think I was being very demanding. Just curious of an update 1 month later.

Most (conventional threaded / multi-process) web servers are not designed for large amounts of long-lived connections that most chat implementations require, and will often derail if you try, taking out your entire site (and other sites) with it. So that doesn't really surprise me. That's why we bundle qwebirc with an embedded web server, which uses non-blocking multiplexing so it can cope with hundreds and even thousands of users.

You can get remote authentication with IRC, but granted that assumes you have some control over the server/network -- which, understandably, most sites don't.

Doesn't work Greg... there is no remote authentication in that.
You're absolutely correct Jaxel, there is no remote authentication in this use of the chat with XenForo forums. :)

I had to go back and carefully read my posts about how I've suggested to use the chat while waiting on development to write an authentication script and I don't think I mentioned that this was a remote authentication. My apology if I in any way led you to believe that this was using remote authentication. The only time I mentioned authentication was "Post Authentication Release" meaning after development has written and released a script that will work with XenForo forums and be fully functional.

The code and instructions I provided was only a means to use your AddonChat with your XenForo forum in a way that the chat will recognizes and login a member with their forum name. Additional configuration in your chat control panel (Professional edition and higher) would allow you to register and assign permissionss to your forum staff to be admins for when logged into the chat and how to makee the chat secure from use from an outside source thus making it for forum members only and must be logged into your forum to use the chat.

This particular set up should even work with the free version of our chat but will have no security oradministrativee options. If I'm allowed to post information for those interested in a free 14 day trial of our Professional Plus chat to try in their forums risk free I'd love to do so.

:)

Hi Guys,

Chris has been on sick leave for the past month and is still recovering. We anticipate his return sometime soon. I just got an email from him where he said that upon his return XenForo integration is among the top three priorities when he does return. He stated that it is" half way done, but it is a chore..."

:)

Hi guys, just wanted to post an update for you.

AddonChat has not abandoned the effort to release a full integration for Xenforo. It is actively being worked on however we can't give you any estimate as to when it will be finalized. The developer working on it is close but he is running into a few problems. A number of Xenforo forums are using our chat with the workaround I posted in our company support forum at http://www.addoninteractive.net/ind...ro-integration/page__view__findpost__p__22917.

Thanks for the Update Greg, I'm satisfied with the current integration on my site, although my members grumble that they can't tell who is in the room before they enter. We eagerly await the official addon.

Any idea if we are talking about days, weeks, or months to complete the integration?

I'm afraid I can't say what the time frame is. We had hoped to release it by December 31 (2011) but as mentioned we were unable to make that deadline.

Ramses, a member of this forum has been able to include the "Who's Chatting" in a Xenforo forum but exactly how it was done I'm not sure.
