Adoption rate of XenForo 2.3 after 12 weeks?

Just wondering what the adoption rate of 2.3+ after 12 weeks is, and how that compares to both 2.1+ and 2.2+ each after being out 12 weeks.

Curious if the adoption rate for 2.3+ is still lower even after the extended wait due to breaking changes for many add-ons.

2.0: 8%
2.1: 8%
2.2: 61%
2.3: 23%

Pretty decent. Can't remember what the adoption was for 2.2 after 12 weeks but it was similar.

Note: These stats do not include XenForo Cloud which is predominantly on XenForo 2.3.

The figures seems fair considering custom add-ons ones might have and the fact that we, developers, haven't ported all our add-ons yet to 2.3 breaking changes.

Is that downloaded figures or installed figures ?

That's what it is for me. I have two teeny forums that are updated but the main one is waiting for addons. It's quite frustrating having spent time on improving themes with variations I'm eager to see what users think. But no, not yet :( . I've said it before but I wish there was a way for addon developers to get a head start. It's why I was a bit snarky about the 2.4 news.

They had a 4 month head start. That’s what betas are for.

I updated the add-ons I had updates for and then tried the rest in my dev. They worked so I went live. I did wait until 2.3.2 since there seemed to be a pretty rapid pace of fixes early on.

(process, by the way, was disable all add-ons, upgrade XF, upgrade my style since there was an update for it, merge a couple templates where I had changes, update the add-ons I had 2.3 updates for and turn them back on, then turn on the unupdated add-ons one at a time, testing as I went)

Really, these numbers don't surprise since they correlate pretty nicely with the difficulty of grading each. 2.0 and 2.1 were probably hamstrung by the work needed to update styles and add-ons going from 1.x to 2.x. I can't see anyone doing the 1.x to 2.x upgrade very quickly. 2.2, by contrast, was a fairly easy, non-breaking update. 2.3 has the issue of some add-ons needing updates.

I launched a new site on 2.3 just recently - no upgrade issues to worry about with a new site - although I have a couple of addons I develop which I still need to test/update for 2.3 which I'll want to use on the new site.

So I have:
  • 2.3 x 1
  • 2.2 x 4
  • 1.5 x 2 😭
  • ... plus a spare license I'm still deciding how I'll use
I'm hoping to have those 2.2 sites upgraded to 2.3 in a couple of weeks - just have some more addons to get upgraded first.

Those 1.5 sites still require quite a bit of work - only 4 major releases behind now

But then I'll finally get them upgraded to 2.3 only to have the XF devs release 3.0 and I'll need to do a whole heap more work to get the sites ready for that release - so perhaps I'm better off waiting and just go straight from 1.5 to 3.0? 🤔

400 members on the new site in under 4 weeks, but it's a private site, so won't actually grow much beyond that - I expect there to be a max of around 500 members each year. We're using it as a communication platform for my son's athletics club replacing TeamApp - I'm doing a lot of custom development to integrate it with our registration platform and our results platform - will even build an online shop for people to buy photos. Next task: build a replacement for SignupGenius into the site to make signing up for coaching sessions far simpler and less error prone than SignupGenius.

I'm actually just waiting for @Ozzy47 to update these add-ons:

Member Self Delete: Unfortunately, this works even under 2.2.16 only with a fix (+ message "File with unexpected content"). It apparently no longer works under 2.3 (or does anyone have other experiences with it?). This add-on in particular is extremely important to me, also to be on the safe side legally (European Union laws).

(This belongs in the core ---> please support: https://xenforo.com/community/threads/give-user-an-option-to-self-delete-their-account.2720/)

Moderate New Replies In Thread [Paid]: I bought this from @Painbaker back then, but it is now distributed by Ozzy47. According to Painbaker, the update for 2.3 is already ready, but only Ozzy47 could give me access to it.. But he hasn't responded for two months.

Registration Spaminator [Paid]: There is no version of this for 2.3 yet either.

I really hope Ozzy47 is doing well. 🙏 Unfortunately, he hasn't been very active here recently.

the site i am staff on is still waiting on some to be upgraded.
the owner said he will wait until 2.4 for the new editor because there was not a lot in 2.3 that was of interest to him.
something about more work than it was worth for the upgrade and 2.2 was working fine for him.

Is it not an option to run the upgrade without the updated add ons? How important are they ? Would they break the community if they’re coming later?

If you rely on addons to give premium members certain perks then they are important. Or just something all members have got used to expecting.

If something goes missing and you try to explain it’s because of an upgrade you just get members saying “why upgrade?”

Was not talking about those kind of add ons, but about @twollert ’s add ons.

Have tried beta testing but decided there were too many bugs to work with.
I did the betas for 2.2 but did not really have time to mess about with beta testing for 2.3 so I didn't even try it in dev until I felt it was ready. Also, there were features in 2.2 that I was interested in but less so 2.3.

9.9/10 times members could care less if you update quicker.

2.3 and 3.0 are unlikely to be updates most users care about (maybe the style change, but that is iffy as most people will complain about style changes regardless).

I tried with 2.3 beta 1 and thought there were just too many bugs to deal with all at once.

That's the beauty of having many opinionated members on this forum.
Those that hate change can go and use another forum's software.
Those that don't want a new editor can stick with the same one.
It's just that they most likely have to get that editor's help from their site because these guys may want to move away from their experiences with the current one.
