Putting the words 'hacky' and 'batch update' in the same sentence makes me nervous.

Just means it's not 'elegant' or the normal XenForo way of doing it whereby you'd extend a class and add your code. Instead, you have to jump through a couple hoops to get the data through the code. Works fine, ran it on a couple big boards against several hundreds of users. Take a backup if you're not sure though.

I am looking for this functionality today. To disable 500+ imported dead usernames.

As announced a few weeks ago this is implemented as of XF 2.2 so not long to wait
