You're not going to suggest manually checking each member's Privacy settings? Maybe there's hope for you after all.

Manually checking each member's privacy settings does not involve the batch user update like you want to use, nor does it allow you to act on a group as a whole. Thus, there is no actual work around in the current system. For your other suggestion, there was a work around (albeit one that requires a decent amount of manual work).

The common factor is the unreasonable amount of work involved, not the batch user updater.
