Just like there are those who are sometimes invisible due to business, personal matters, etc., but later become visible again, there are those who may only want to disable the showing of their activity temporarily, but otherwise don't mind their online status being shown. However, because the option to show your current activity is on the Browsing Preferences overlay / page, it's kind of hidden and most people likely even forget it's there, even if they wanted to re-enable their current activity.
