Anyone any thoughts as to what KAM mean by this? Previously they said a mobile style was planned but this to me sounds more like a responsive design...

I hope it was responsive. The last reference to mobile style in XF 1.2 was months ago and a lot of things have changed.
Arty's Responsive Addon works really well and it's great proof that you don't need another mobile style to maintain in order to provide mobile experience.
