Frequently asked questions
Does this create a separate video file?
No. It embeds the original YouTube video and controls the selected playback segment. It does not download, trim, or rehost the video.
Will videos use my hosting storage?
The add-on stores no video files on your hosting. Posts contain the clip’s video ID, timestamps, and optional caption.
Does this require XenForo Media Gallery?
No. Talmyric Video Clips works with core XenForo.
Do I need a YouTube API key?
No. The add-on uses YouTube’s embedded player without a YouTube Data API key.
How do members create a clip?
Click the
YouTube clip toolbar button, paste a YouTube link, choose Start and End, optionally add a caption, and click
Insert clip.
Members can preview the video and use
Set start here and
Set end here instead of typing timestamps.
How do I add a timestamp to a link?
Paste the normal YouTube link into the clip window, enter a time in Start—for example, 4:15—then click
Add start time to link.
The add-on creates the timestamped URL and adjusts End automatically.
Can I paste an already timestamped link?
Yes. For example:
Supported timestamps fill the Start field automatically. Both Start and End can still be changed before inserting the clip.
How long can clips be?
Administrators choose the minimum and maximum duration, within the add-on’s supported range of
1–60 seconds.
The original installation defaults are a
5-second minimum,
15-second maximum, and
10-second default clip length.
To use a 30-second default, set Maximum clip duration to at least 30 seconds too.
Can clips play once instead of repeating?
Yes. Turn off
Loop clip playback in the ACP. Playback stops at the selected end, and the Replay button can start the segment again if that button is enabled.
Why does the player still show the full YouTube video?
The clip uses YouTube’s original player. The add-on controls the selected segment, but it does not create a new video with its own independent timeline.
Are the loop boundaries frame-accurate?
No. Seeking, looping, and stopping are approximate and depend on YouTube, the browser, and playback conditions. A perfectly seamless loop is not guaranteed.
Can members edit a clip after posting?
Yes, provided they can edit the post.
Open the post’s normal
Edit screen, click
Edit YouTube clip in the rich editor toolbar, select the clip, make changes, and click
Save clip. Then save the post normally.
Can members reuse a clip in another reply?
Yes.
Copy clip copies its BB code, including the caption and timestamps.
Where quick reply is available,
Quote this clip inserts it into a normal attributed quote.
Does Quote this clip publish a reply automatically?
No. It adds the clip to the reply draft. The member adds any comment and submits the reply when ready.
Why is Quote this clip missing?
The button requires:
- The ACP option to be enabled.
- Permission to create clips.
- A message with XenForo’s native quote/reply action.
- An available quick-reply editor.
It may be unavailable in search results, standalone previews, locked threads, or customized layouts without the native controls. Copy clip can be used instead.
Why are the clip toolbar buttons disabled in BB-code mode?
XenForo disables formatting toolbar commands in BB-code view. Switch back to the rich editor to use the clip windows. The clip’s BB code can still be edited manually.
Can guests watch embedded clips?
Yes, if their user group has
Talmyric: play embedded YouTube clips permission. Otherwise, they see a timestamped YouTube link.
Why can an administrator not create clips?
The add-on’s permissions must be granted explicitly, including to administrator accounts through their applicable user groups.
Can I hide individual buttons?
Yes. Copy, Replay, and Quote this clip each have their own ACP visibility option.
These options control the interface; they do not replace user-group permissions.
Does the add-on load YouTube immediately when a thread opens?
No. The add-on waits for
Play clip or
Preview clip before loading YouTube. Copying a clip or reading a timestamp does not require a YouTube request.
Does the add-on generate a thumbnail from the selected moment?
No. It uses a local play placeholder. Arbitrary timestamp thumbnails are not provided by the YouTube Data API.
Why will some videos not play?
A video may be private, removed, restricted, unavailable in the viewer’s region, or configured to prevent embedding. Browser settings, content blockers, or site security headers may also prevent playback.
The player provides an error message and a YouTube link where applicable.
Does validation prove that a video exists or that the selected time is available?
No. Server validation checks the URL/ID format and timing rules. It does not fetch YouTube metadata to certify the video’s availability or actual duration.
What happens if I change the duration limits?
The new limits also apply when existing clips are rendered or messages are validated. Clips outside the new limits may display as literal BB code and need their times adjusted.
Changing only the
default clip length does not rewrite existing clips.
How do I upgrade?
Use
ACP → Add-ons → Install/upgrade from archive and select the new ZIP. Do not uninstall first.
What happens when I disable or uninstall it?
When the add-on’s global option is disabled, existing valid clips render as links and new clips cannot be added.
Disabling or uninstalling the add-on through XenForo leaves stored post text intact. Without the custom BB code registered, clip markup may appear literally.
