BYO OpenAI API key support is here

AI Rules Moderation can now use your own OpenAI API key for moderation checks.

When BYO OpenAI API key mode is enabled, hosted moderation credits are not used, automatic credit top-ups do not apply, and OpenAI usage is handled through your own OpenAI account.

Other improvements in this release:

  • Added AI usage mode selection: BYO OpenAI API key or hosted moderation credits.
  • Added encrypted local storage for saved OpenAI API keys.
  • Unified moderation dispatch across supported XenForo versions.
  • Added moderation scope support through the add-on’s own dispatcher.
  • Disabled older native XenForo webhook delivery to prevent duplicate checks.
  • Improved trial, subscription, credit, and BYO-mode messaging in the setup page.
  • Improved setup/upgrade repair routines for tables, indexes, API key records, and old webhook cleanup.

Annual access is still required to use AI Rules Moderation. BYO key mode changes how AI usage is paid for; it does not remove the product access subscription.
  • Added XenForo 2.1 and 2.2 support for sites running PHP 7.2+.
  • Added a compatibility webhook system for older XenForo versions that do not include native XF 2.3 webhooks.
  • Preserved the existing XenForo 2.3+ native webhook implementation unchanged.
  • Improved moderation dispatch reliability with queued delivery, duplicate protection, stale-content checks, and safer version-aware class loading.
  • Maintained existing approval queue and moderation callback behaviour across supported XenForo versions.
  • Fixed incorrect version_id value.
For XenForo <v2.3.8
  • Older XenForo versions that do not safely support webhook criteria continue using the previous broad webhook behaviour (all nodes, all users, all content types).
For XenForo >=v2.3.8
  • Added new AI moderation scope settings for nodes, user groups, and supported content types within the existing AI rules/settings page.
  • Added XenForo-native webhook criteria integration for scoped dispatch, preventing non-matching content from being sent for AI moderation.
  • User group filtering is strict: if a user belongs to any unselected primary or secondary group, their content is skipped.

Thanks to @greenchicken for the great suggestions!
  • Admins can now view and update automatic top-up status and annual top-up cap directly from the add-on.
  • Trial accounts do not show auto top-up controls, as top-ups only apply after paid access is active.
  • Added setup-page guidance for XenForo’s edit log display setting to improve edited post moderation coverage.
  • Added an Admin CP audit log for AI Rules Moderation outcomes.
  • Logs both moderated content and checked content where no action was taken.
  • Added support for log_only callback results without changing content state.
  • Added audit log filtering, sorting, pagination, and CSV export.
  • Stores additional moderation metadata, including content date, logged date, outcome/action, status, and reason.
  • Updated the approval queue reason display to use the new audit log data.
  • Added upgrade handling for existing installs so previous reason records are preserved.
  • Improved audit log table layout and shortened visible reason previews with “Show full reason”.
  • Added trial-aware Admin CP messaging and credit labels while preserving existing paid subscription behaviour.
  • Added Admin CP helper text showing the current XenForo Board title and Board meta description as suggested values for forum name and forum about.
  • Changed AI Rules Moderation to use a dedicated least-privilege API scope instead of a super-user/all-scopes API key.
  • Added an Options menu link to the add-on controls menu, linking directly to the AI Rules Moderation setup page.
  • Updated the add-on icon to use a custom image asset instead of the default Font Awesome shield.
