AI-assisted rules moderation for XenForo​

AI Rules Moderation helps XenForo forums review eligible new and edited public text content against your own forum rules.

When content clearly appears to breach those rules, it can be moved into XenForo's built-in approval queue with an AI-generated reason for staff review. Your moderators stay in control. The add-on does not automatically delete content, ban users, warn users, punish users, publicly mark users, or make final moderation decisions.

How it works​

1. Install the add-on using XenForo's normal add-on process.
2. Open the AI Rules Moderation setup page in the Admin CP.
3. Choose whether checks use your own OpenAI API key or hosted moderation credits.
4. Write your forum rules in plain English.
5. Choose the moderation scope: supported content types, nodes, and user groups.
6. When eligible content is created or edited, the add-on queues a moderation check.
7. If the content clearly appears to breach your rules, it is moved to the approval queue with a reason.
8. Staff review the content and make the final decision using XenForo's normal moderation tools.

Two AI usage modes​

Use your own OpenAI API key​

BYO OpenAI API key mode lets you pay OpenAI directly for AI usage. The saved key is encrypted in your XenForo installation and sent to the moderation service for each moderation check. Hosted moderation credits and automatic credit top-ups are not used in this mode.

The 14-day trial still applies to product access. While using your own OpenAI API key, the hosted trial-credit limit does not apply because checks are handled through your own OpenAI account.

Use hosted moderation credits​

Hosted-credit mode is available if you prefer not to manage your own OpenAI API key. The 14-day trial includes 100 hosted trial checks. Paid annual access includes hosted moderation credits, with optional top-ups for higher-volume forums.

You can limit AI checks by supported content type, forum/node, and user group.

Built for cautious moderation​

AI Rules Moderation is designed as a triage tool, not an enforcement bot.

The goal is to surface clear likely rule violations sooner while avoiding irreversible AI action. If the content is borderline, unclear, ordinary disagreement, or heated discussion that does not clearly breach your written rules, the safer outcome is for the add-on not to act.

This makes it best suited to communities that want moderation help without handing final authority to AI.

API access and security posture​

The add-on creates a dedicated XenForo API key using only its own custom API scope:

ai_rules_moderation:write

It is not a super-user key and it is not a general-purpose XenForo API key. No standard XenForo API scopes are granted for posts, threads, users, conversations, attachments, nodes, authentication, or general administration.

The API key exists so the moderation service can return a moderation decision to your XenForo installation and allow the add-on to move clearly flagged content into the approval queue.

Hosted processing and data handling​

AI Rules Moderation requires the hosted moderation service to function. The add-on may send the forum domain, forum name/description, saved rules, supported content type and ID, submitted message text, message state, last edit date, and related thread/forum context where available.

Private conversations, attachments, images, files, and media are not sent because they are not supported content types.

When using BYO OpenAI API key mode, OpenAI usage is handled through your own OpenAI account. When using hosted credits, AI usage is handled through the hosted moderation service.

Pricing and trial​

Annual access is required after the trial, regardless of whether you use your own OpenAI API key or hosted moderation credits.

Good fit​

AI Rules Moderation is a good fit for forums that have public discussion, clear rules, and moderation workload that is hard to manage with keyword filters alone.

It is especially useful where context matters: finance/trading communities, gaming communities, marketplaces, political discussion, large hobby forums, and fast-moving public communities.

Not a good fit​

This is not the right add-on if you need automatic bans, automatic warnings, automatic permanent deletion, private conversation scanning, image/file/media moderation, historical bulk scanning, or AI making final moderation decisions.

Requirements​

• XenForo 2.1.0 or newer.
• PHP 7.2.0 or newer.
• Active trial or paid subscription.
• Outbound HTTPS access from your forum server to the hosted moderation service.
