    Wood Computer

Just wrapped up another custom build. Some of you may remember the barn wood computer from a while back. This one is a bit different and figured some of you here might enjoy it. More photos, specs and details here: http://www.gillphotos.com/gillespie-photography/wood-computer

    Hyper-threading in servers

Neither have I until I moved our web server to our place of business. The power savings will pay for itself within a few months time and from there on out, it is just a hiccup in our monthly power bill.

    Hyper-threading in servers

I finally decided to go with a ASRock Q1900 which has the Intel j1900 processor built in. Its a 4 core Celeron CPU and uses a low 10 watts of power. I had a slight issue getting Ubuntu 12.04 to place nice with the Realtek RTL8111GR NIC, but after rolling back the driver to version 8168, it has...

    Stay safe DigitalPoint.

I find this entire thread a bit strange... giving a convicted felon your condolences.

    Hyper-threading in servers

I do believe the i3 4130 does have HT enabled. Actually, I believe every Haswell CPU except for the Pentium and Celeron have it enabled.

    Hyper-threading in servers

Trying to decide on the Haswell i3 or the Pentium 3220 for our web server, but was curious if apache & MySQL benefit from hyper-threading? A while back I know MySQL performance was actually degraded with HT enabled... however, has that changed? There isn't a huge performance gap between the two...

    Server build, need suggestions

Thanks for the suggestion. A new machine would save about $40/year in power over my current system, so its something I'll get done in the near future.

    Server build, need suggestions

I have since upgraded the drive to a SSD, but will leave the board/CPU/mem the same. I don't think I'll go with an Atom either, unless someone has volumes to speak about their performance.

    Server build, need suggestions

I was thinking the i5 is a bit over kill. Anyone have experience with Atom based machines for hosting? The power savings would add up over time... The load on my Opteron never averages above .12, which is why I thought the i5 would be a bit much.

    Server build, need suggestions

I run a small dedicated box for my business site, as well as one Xenforo install and a couple of other smaller sites. I think there are 10 sites in total in a LAMP environment. A few of them are running WordPress, but nothing real resource intense. Current specs: Dual Core AMD Opteron(tm)...

    iOS 7

Anyone else noticing a slight delay when coming out of sleep mode? When I press the Home or Power button, I get a slight delay which then fades into my lock screen. This is one animation I don't understand. This is on an iPhone 5.

    iOS 7

On a whole, I feel as if iOS7 was a rather mute release. The inability to adjust the vibrant overload of colors bugs me. The extreme rounded corners look antiquated. The 3D effect on the background is a borderline waste of resources. The lack of drop shadow on a high contrast background makes...

    Windows 7 vs Windows 8

I've converted both of our work stations over to Windows 8 now and have no huge complaints. The UI requires some time to get use to, but overall, its been a solid experience.

    Anyone Love Cameras Around Here?

It can be a bit too big at times. I seldomly use it for first look/reveals, but other than that, it stays in the safe 98% of the time... However, when used... its magical.
