I want to copy all of the stuff from the template of the node list, and use it in a custom page so that it displays the different forums and recent posts, etc.

Are you sure I can't just have a login box, using the same included files, send the request to the login file and have it redirect to the home page, and copy the same session code from the source code and just pull info from the DataBase to display?

Usually, I just mark forums as read on the homepage. I don't have the time to go and read all of the messages that it says are unread. But what if I just want to see any unread threads that have been posted and I haven't even seen yet?
I'm suggesting the option to change if the forums say that...
I agree with everyone here that it's a bad idea.
However, I think that when you post and having the post appear above instead of reloading would be great.
EDIT: *facepalm* It already does that.
