Forum community options

I used both IPS and Xen. Both are very easy to use admin wise. The major difference in my opinion between the two is that Xen has a larger selection of 3rd party add ons. One thing that IPS has that I think is a plus is a page editor. You could create pages very easily on it.

Plus finer control over permissions, style settings and settings generally. Whether or not these are major depends on the use case.

when you already have the default base and can easily on the front end (and only once) create a separate/child style off of it
This is incorrect.

If you really want to have a default style which is left completely untouched and unused for the very rare occasion you may need one for troubleshooting style issues, the new default style you create should have no parent.

What would you say you prefer about xenforo ocmpared to IPB?

IPB is very enterprise focused - both in pricing + feature set. E.g if itā€™s a must have for yku to be able to link your community to a business CRM system, then IPB is probably the way to go. Itā€™s a good platform, but I generally prefer XF and find it easier to use. I run sites across both IPB and XF and will probably end up consolidating on XF.

XF is on the whole fairly intuitive, and easy to customise.

I havenā€™t used Wotlab recently, or any of the free alternatives.

One thing Iā€™d suggest - set up a demo, and play about with the ACP and feature set. If youā€™re just looking to create a new community, then XF is a good option. If you have a specific feature in mind thatā€™s a ā€œmust haveā€, then youā€™ll probably need to review each platform to see how well it supports that feature.

Just forums and an articles section
Then XF is a good bet as it covers both. If you want a more advanced article system then @Bob is the best out there, you can see it in action on:

On my Spiritual site (the link is in my signature) I've just used the built in article option of XF to push my articles out there.

I've demoed Woltlab and it's a nice system, but not so easy to customise as XF and I like getting my hands dirty lol. Feel free to visit any of my sites linked in my signature, they all use XF. Good luck to you regardless of where you lay your hat, we need more people opening forum sites.

You mean codeless? If so, great
XF is one of the easier scripts to "style" in many ways. There are a ton of style properties available that control many aspects of it when compared to IPS (4.3 version I ran, but I doubt it's improved much considering what they did with ability to do custom CSS edits).
You can also tweak a site quite a bit with simple CSS/LESS code in extra.less which is a standard template in XF.
In fact, the pipe site in my sig is basically a default XF style that has been primarily tweaked via extra.less with some slightuse of the style properties options.

Errr... until you need to test something under a default style and don't want to have to go through the trouble of creating it again. ;)
It's simpler leaving the default style untouched and disabled for normal users, create a new style and mess with it. How often have we been asked "does it work under the default style" when pursuing support (either via ticket or from community).
Default theme just inherits from Master, so you can just create a new Default.

Fairly complete basic feature set, even if there is room for improvement. For all its flaws, the editor (Froala) does the job well for basic posting. Management is fairly easy if you're comfortable around computers and have a good basic knowledge set about them. Has both cloud and self-hosted options so you have choice in how to run it (I'm self-hosted but that's because I predate the cloud). Has support and a strong, supportive user community, which puts it a notch above a lot of the open source options I've seen. Just some first thoughts. That said, I've only been a user or mod on other systems, XF is the only one where I've been an admin/sysadmin.

How do both the features as well as the mod panel compare on XF to other forum softwares?

i believe IBP also have a strong user support doesnā€™t it?

To use for users phpbb is more complicated than smf.
A forum must be intuitive for the users who use it.
The personal panel to check messages or edit your profile is really not very intuitive.

How would you compare PHPBB to XF?
You can try both out for free and you'll get a much better idea for yourself - way better grasp of the pros and cons and how it suits you. I am biased because I have used phpBB, Simple Forums, IPB, vBulletin and I know that xenForo is way ahead for my needs and desires. But everyone is different...

How would you compare the user friendliness between SMF and XF?

Iā€™ve never used SMF AFAIK, and I typically go on forums hosted on XF.

Can't compare...
It depends on your community.
If you plan to do a lot of articles you can also use wordpress + bbpress.
Starting a new forum today is not easy.
If you're starting from scratch and you don't need a mod gallery I'd start with smf and then if the site starts working you migrate to xf

Thank you for your views. As a software engineer, Iā€™m flexible. I was hoping for as many views as possible from whatā€™s most user friendly for the end user.
