Your Largest Thread(s)

Silly question, but I was curious as to what some of your largest threads are in your XenForo forums. And if so, do you see them affecting performance of the board, either in terms of reading through pages, searching, generating your search index, and so on.

About a dozen years ago, one of the forums I now administer was hacked--I was not the admin at that point (although I was on staff), and the forum was hosted at Rackshack, which was unmanaged. The site was recovered from a backup, but one thing that really dragged the recovery into the ground was a single 23,000+ post thread. While rebuilding the search engine in vBulletin, that single thread would be indexing posts at the rate of one or two per second. The admin ended up disabling search on a new forum section, and moved some of our longer threads into it.

Ever since, we have capped threads at 1,000 posts, and after a decade it has become almost part of the forum culture--members expect it, and the staff gets frequent reminders or reported posts to close the old thread and start a new one. These are primarily "throwaway" threads, ones where members post and move on, not reading back. (Such as, "What are you listening to right now?" "What is the weather like at this moment?") Given how efficient XF and ElasticSearch are, I really see no need to have a 1,000 post limit. I may have the staff bump that up to 10,000 (just to reduce their workloads), or not even bother with a limit at all.

I am curious to know if anyone else does this on their forum. And, if there is really a need for it anymore.

Having a 1,000 post limit is a throwback to VB.
There's no need to do it in XF.

Even on my small forum I have threads with well over 5,ooo posts.

Likewise there are threads on here with over 5,000 posts also.

I'm fine with letting them go unlimited, personally. And my staff would also be relieved. But you know, there are always those 0.02% of members who complain about any little change to the routine. :D

I don't even know if there is a practical upper limit to thread length. XF is so much more efficient.

I seem to recall some posts on here discussing threads with tens of thousands of posts.
I'll see if I can find one of them.

I also seem to recall a discussion I had with Mike a while ago about very large threads and the implications of them.
If only I could remember the details...

Title says it all.

Out of all the forum threads you've ever seen, which one was the longest?

How many posts/pages did it have?

Link?

Anxious to see the input. :D

Holy crap!

Check this one out...

The largest single thread on our forum has just under 23,000 posts.

Having a post limit on threads is not a something we have ever had.

There are no problems.
