A number of RP forums run off Xenforo and used to rely on a subaccount mod.
Users have a parent account which they use to login.
Users may created subaccounts for characters without entering a seperate password and email address.
Users can customise each subaccount (avatar, signature, user fields)
Users can switch between accounts in a simple drop down menu
Users can see the number of notifications against each account they own alongside the names in the drop down
Users can see which accounts are linked to an account on its profile page (they can see the owner of any character)
Admins can configure subaccounts to be given specific groups
Admins can set permissions on which user groups can create subaccounts
There is a mod for XF1 but this is not being ported to Xf2: https://xenforo.com/community/threads/th-sub-accounts-paid.108818/page-4
There are a number of forums interested in this functionality. Don't want to end up stuck on XF1 if they stop issuing security patches and neither do I want to end up on a jcink :/
Doesn't seem the most simple mod to me. Requires extended the user tables to put the links between accounts in place, forms to create subaccounts etc
