I was thinking about this earlier today working on an Astro project... and I got to thinking, XF backend with Astro frontend, hot damn that would open frontend design potential to create some amazing and highly interactive user experience of using a forum.
Now I'm starting to ponder how useful that REST API could be for this!!! Geez I wish XF 3.x was something that cool... it would kick other forum software to the kerb for design possibilities. WebSockets would need adding.
Container queries, CSS subgrid, proper cascade layers, Tailwind, any component library you want. Magazine-style thread layouts, card-based forum indexes, virtual scrolling on long threads, proper mobile-first without fighting responsive assumptions. Micro-interactions, real animated transitions between views. Stuff that's genuinely painful to bolt onto XF's template system.
