Why would anyone pay dedicated server money on "cloud forum" solutions?

@Smartea is it you? The Christmas troll?

I've heard so much about you without ever seeing you! It's impressive to see you at work.

And you disappear on what date? The 31st at midnight?

Just engagement/rage bait at this point.

It’s not just hundreds of dollars. Sometimes it’s thousands.

The value in Cloud is different for different people.

In some cases it has freed up multiple people (paid I would expect about 6-figures between them) managing multiple servers to focus on other priorities.

In some cases it has allowed a person who knows what they are doing who simply no longer want to do it themselves to focus on running their community and no longer worry about any technical details outside of running their forum.

In some cases it has allowed people to pay for a couple of months of subscription to quickly test their concept for a forum before taking their data to a self hosted environment.

In some cases it has allowed someone who has never run a forum before, who has never run a website before, who barely know what a domain name is (let alone cPanel, FTP, SSH), start working on a new forum within minutes.

To these people it is far from a rip off. If you have the time, skill, inclination to do it yourself then perhaps it isn’t the best value.

But every customer is different. You seem to be ignorant to that fact. For some, $195 is not a brazen rip off. For some, paying thousands a month for Cloud makes perfect economical sense. For some, it doesn’t and that is also fine.

I'll say this and I'll say this only once - not a bad faith actor, not here to trash xenforo, hell i use it myself. Not here to rage or clickbait, simply a man of a different culture. Not English, not American.

Passive aggressive comments from people suggest foul play on their end.

That's it. You're welcome to ban or delete my content and it's understandable, but lying about me or my intentions on the account of instigators is not welcome.

Thank you. I'm taking a break.

You know how much they love their tea.
Not just the British. Some of their descendants in former colonies, too.;) Not to mention Asian cultures like China and Japan where coffee is actually a recent arrival. Do not diss tea drinkers. We are many.😁

I work in IT so running a dedicated server is quite within my skillset. Yet, I run my site on shared hosting, not a dedicated. Cost is not the only reason (it is to some degree). And at this point, if I needed more capacity, cloud is exactly where I would look. Why? I do IT 8x5 and sometimes outside business hours for work. I don't need to be messing with servers and operating systems in my spare time. For a personal project like this, I would rather focus on the application, not the underlying fiddly bits. And our other admin has a fairly full life so if I ever step down, there will be even more need to have the fiddly bits looked after by a cloud or shared hosting provider.

That said, cost is actually why I am not on the cloud. My current shared hosting + Xenforo support costs something like a third to a half what XF Cloud would cost me. And the shared hosting is more than enough given our current activity level. Yes, we would get the first party add-ons included, but we don't use those anyhow and the only one I would actually want to implement might be Enhanced Search. We have no business case for Resource Manager or Media Gallery. So basically, an extra spend without much clear benefit.

So Cloud would be my first choice if I needed more capacity, but I do not and the cost can't be justified right now for either dedicated or Cloud.

A break is indeed well needed. Please don’t return with your current attitude. :)

I'm an aussie and i'm loving the cloud so far!
In fact my crew that loved the self hosting option love the cloud more too.
Nothing at all brazen about the price.

I think @Smartea needs to go to https://www.proboards.com first to set up his forum. Rather than whinge about the cost of things just to annoy @Chris D and the staff. This software (xenforo) isn't free.

if i could afford it i would be a good candidate as i only want to run one site.
but for others like the guy that hosts my site.
he runs several other sites also so it would be more expensive for him.

Yeah, the current hosting bill for my sites is approaching US$350 per month, but if you include the time I spend on configuring and managing my servers, it would easily be up to 10x that amount.

People always look at the headline figures and completely miss the time cost involved.

Try buying a dedicated server and then paying an expert to configure and maintain it for you. The cost will not be in the hundreds of dollars per month - it will be thousands of dollars per month.

What you get from a service like XenForo cloud is a turn-key service - you just sign up and it works. If something breaks on the server, someone else fixes it for you. If you have a problem with your site - you get priority support to help fix it.

That is not what you get from running your own server - you cannot compare them.
