And as digitalpoint pointed out, who really except someone very vain, would really want to always see a photo of them self?!

An avatar is nothing more than a visual identifier. There's nothing vain about someone wanting to be easily identified by an actual picture of themselves -- as in how we, humans, do it in a lot of other social settings. Then you have those who aren't down with that, which is cool too.

As someone who doesn't post much, I see other users' avatars far more than my own (even while logged in), so mileage varies I suppose.
 
Another difference, on YouTube, Facebook, etc... you can use your real name. On a forum, you could, but if its already taken... SOL.
