One of my forums, Peru Hardware, really looks old

My sites are 'up to date' (all in the 3.8x vB), but only http://www.waltdisneyboards.com has a fully custom style. My http://www.mysterydistrict.com will probably be the first to convert over to xenForo followed by http://www.legendaryrockers.com and http://fantasyleagueforums.com

Generally, I don't think sites automatically look dated any time new design practices come out right away (at least, for non-simple designs). If you have a theme that fits your site's topic of discussion, I don't think it would look dated at all.

I agree, if you site's forum is about the start of the interwebz then you might not want to go with web 2.0
