Where are the templates located

I understand how to find templates under appearance > templates

but where are they in the file system, i thought they'd be in the library somewhere but can't find them ... as i'd like to look at them in an external editor! is it possible? or do they not exist as files?

The templates aren't stored in a file system, they are in the database.

thanks, i thought that might be the case, my editor doesn't support webdav, i've got an old copy of dreamweaver MX maybe i'll install that
