I believe it's a new search id and it just goes up as far as the system allows.

What does it do tho? Are searches recorded or something? If not, whats the point of having the numbers increase every time you click the link if it does nothing?

Yes, they are recorded in xf_search table. That table has a search_id index.

Ah! So what does it record? I am only clicking a "What's new" link.

Are typed searches (search bar) recorded as well?

    Yes, in the xf_search table.

What is the benefit of that? Does the counter have a limit and/or does it ever stop? I never noticed until coming about this topic.

It's a programming thing that you can just ignore. Probably caches a heap of data and/or has to do with the indexing.

Ah ok, fair enough. If it doesn't bother me or make too much of a difference to anything, then I better ignore it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. ;)
