What's broken when PHP exec() is unavailable?

We're evaluating a shared hosting environment for our forum, and it seems PHP exec() is commonly disabled by the provider. This is flagged as a potential issue during installation, but it's not clear what will actually be broken as a result. I see mention of some Media Gallery functions, however we're not planning on using Media Gallery. I'm aware that some third-party add-ons use it. Anything else, or anything more fundamental? We're trying to decide how worried we should be.
