What are the functions of the Bar Association?

They plan parties. [/joke].

If you are talking about the United States, it depends on what state you mean. There are some states where the Bar Association has attorney admission and discipline functions. Other states, the Bar Association basically does things like offer continuing legal education classes, attorney assistance, lobbying, networking (and, yes, parties).

I am in Oklahoma but trying to figure out the function of the California bar association. Particularly wondering about the disipline function.

While I was looking for a trademark lawyer, I heard of this "bar association" and I never understood what the hell it is, or was. I was confused enough.

I know what a bar is, but a bar association? News to me.

Here is a link to the CA Bar Association: http://www.calbar.ca.gov/Home.aspx
This link tells more about the function in CA: http://www.calbar.ca.gov/AboutUs/StateBarOverview.aspx

In California, it is a "unified" Bar Association, meaning all lawyers admitted to practice law in the state must be a member. The Bar Association also handles investigation of lawyer misconduct and refers appropriate cases to the State Bar Court (this is an unusual structure, having its own independent court to handle and prosecute cases).

Hope this helped.

Why I asked what the Bar Association did was I tried to make a complaint about a lawyer to the Bar Association, I never was able to give my complaint, the person on the phone suggested I talk to a lawyer about the issue.

Why I complained a California told me it would be against the law to file a police report against his client. I went ahead and filed the police report anyway. I think talked to this lawyer again and asked when I was gong to get surved papers. The lawyer said his client had told him that we had worked out the issues, we had not. Someone in California has a lawyer write a letter telling me that I was going to be sued. The guy had been caught shilling red handed on my forum and had told me that he had people everywhere and I needed to watch out for my safety. He was mad because I called him on having more than one user id and shilling.

I thought it was very unethical for the lawyer to tell me it would be against the law to file a police report since he basicly told me he was going to send people to get me.

Seems to me you would have a valid complaint. However, it is also the case that unless there is lawyer-client abuse (usually stealing client funds) or gross malpractice (failing to meet filing deadlines, not communicating with a client, etc.) it is unusual for an attorney to be disciplined. Not saying this is right, just what commonly happens.
