We'll be switching to Xenforo from vB very soon... Any recommendations? (High traffic)

We're excited about it, esp. now that development has restarted on xF. Our website has over 60 million pageviews a year and we're confident xF will handle it with aplomb.

Our forums had over two million posts with 17k registered members, but we've heavily pruned them down to about a half a million in anticipation of easing the import to xF.

Any recommendations or suggestions as to valuable must-have add-ons, esp. for a forum of our size?

On a side note, we're in the process of developing a Wordpress <--> Xenforo plugin that meets our needs and will work with Memberpress (subscription plugin for WP @ memberpress.com). So far it is working well, it allows two-way login and logout, with registration handled at WP (via MemberPress). We wanted to migrate away from aMember which had become too problematic for us. If all works well and the code is nicely packable, we'll look into releasing it as an add-on for those needing a more robust WP/XF connection.

Many thanks!
Ray

P.S. We are especially needing some sort of ad management solution that will let us use our DFP code to ease load on the servers and allow for us to serve up ads based on user level (paid member = no ads), etc.

Make sure you remove any duplicate email addresses before importing.

Be sure to select the option to preserve all id's. That way you will have the same post, thread, forum and attachment numbers as well as others.

Why did you prune posts? XF can import easily - I did a test import last year with over 2M posts and XF handled it without breaking into a sweat :)

For ads just create a usergroup for supporting members then use conditionals to show/hide them.

It was time to clean house anyway. ;)

Sounds good on usergroup conditionals, but it seems it would be easiest to use some sort of add-on that handles ads, right?

I'm working on developing an ad manager if you want to share your list of needed features I will work on implementing them. In short summary, right now my ad manager automates everything, your members can add funds via paypal (more paygates coming), set up campaigns targetting widgets (my ad manager creates a new widget type for bd widget framework which allows you to position ads in various spots, and can use conditionals to determine what user groups see them, etc...), with budget amounts. If nobody has started a campaign in that section then it reverts back to the default html you selected (your code in this instance, could be an 'advertise here' type link).

"Must have" add ons vary by community. You'll have to be more specific about your site and your needs before one could generate a list.

XenForo will work flawlessly on just about any hosting environment. If you're happy where you are now & it's able to run vBulletin (which you've been using), then it will be more than enough to run XenForo without going anywhere else (because XenForo uses less resources).

My recommendation for any import is of course to do a test import first. And as for add-ons I would recommend the following

  1. http://xenforo.com/community/resources/bd-tag-me-for-xenforo-1-2.386/
  2. http://xenforo.com/community/resources/sitemap-for-xenforo-1-2-compatible.67/
  3. http://xenforo.com/community/resources/bd-tag-me-for-xenforo-1-2.386/
  4. http://xenforo.com/community/resources/check-display-password-strength.1619/
  5. http://xenforo.com/community/resources/sonnb-stop-spam-here.1086/
  6. http://xenforo.com/community/threads/xf-qaptcha.41043/page-6#post-621439
  7. http://xenforo.com/community/resources/quoteme.1078/
  8. http://xenforo.com/community/resources/post-ratings-taking-likes-to-the-next-level.410/
  9. http://xenforo.com/community/resources/bd-widget-framework.297/
  10. http://xenforo.com/community/resources/tinhte-image-attachment-optimization-cdn-support.909/
  11. http://xenforo.com/community/resources/bd-attachment-store.1779/
  12. http://xenforo.com/community/resources/wmtech-social-share-privacy.2287/
  13. http://xenforo.com/community/resources/bd-mails.2313/
That only 13.

1 will extend the core features a bit
2 may help with SEO
1 will encourage your users to use better password
2 of them will help to prevent spam.
2 of them will help optimize attachments
1 of them will help optimize and easily manage the side bar
2 will also encourage user participation
1 will help user privacy in social media (and also improve your page load speed)
1 will improve mail management, delivery, and help take the load off your server

What's your URL? :)

If you use Blogs, Albums and Social Groups in vB you'll have to buy some add-ons (some $150 in all) to import that data without losing nothing.

Good luck, Solari. Do update us regarding your migration. :)

I'm very interested in a MemberPress <--> XenForo plugin as well and am looking forward to the release of the bridge as an addon.(y)

So the registration process will be handled by Wordpress ?
A major issue with the current XF/WP integrations is generating Wordpress cookies. W3TotalCache doesn't work either (or any caching).
Xenscripts.com is one integration, it uses Xenforo as the master for registrations.

I will keep yawl posted, swamped right now but it is going well. We're just working on importing over 17k members from aMember into Memberpress/WP and then hooking it into Xenforo. Kinda hairy but we're getting there.

We're still working on this but it is almost done. Integrated two-way login is working, we're tweaking redirects so it will send folks back to the right place depending on where they logged in first (WP or XF).

It's also set to synch up user-levels so if a customer's subscription expires, that will synch out to XF to rejigger his access levels.

I did ask my developer to make sure it could work with W3TC, so he is aware of it and will do his best. Some of that is contingent on Memberpress, though which is out of our control.
