Website as a file repository

Hi everybody. :)

Well, lately I've been looking into setting up a website where documents and various media files may be provided for downloading purposes. This includes .doc, .pdf, .xls, .mp3, .wmv, .avi files.

After searching here and there, I thought that Joomla along with the DOCMan would be a nice choice. I've actually installed them and am testing, but what really puts me off is the fact that it doesn't support files in subfolders. All the files need to be in one single folder on the server, although you can categorize them in any way and number of categories at the front end.

Thought I'd ask if anyone has any suggestions / better ideas regarding how a file repository website could be set up. :)

I hope I'm not making a mistake posting this in the Off Topic category.

Just the thing for you...

Look here at my file repository...

These are ALL FreeWare apps , just signup and look around & you will see it is just what you described that you needed , sections, folders , files etc etc...

The link to download the script is in the page footer.. If you use it please consider making a small donation to the coder.

Regards..

I dare say it but , this could be used as a replacement for the Downloads II addon..
As long as someone can come up with a working bridge between XF & this for signing in..

I used Downloads II myself on vB but found it unreliable enough to remove it , this would need its own install and database but I think
that is more practical & reliable as compared to an intergrated download system ..

Regards..

XenForo itself could be used for a dedicated file repository website.

I never really thought about this but technically it could. You wouldn't have the stats and some other features but it would work. Might have to give this some more thought.

Well, I was actually looking for something that was a bit more advanced compared to DownloadsII. Please don't get me wrong, other than a couple of issues which were related to vB, I love the plugin itself. I'd perhaps even be willing to pay for something better, but only if I could find it.

DOCman is good, but focuses mainly on documents, and adding files is a pain as well.

Mmmm, via a plugin, right? Or is there any other way I don't know of? :)

With a portal like XenPorta you could bring the latest uploads from within "forums" to the home page in a WPBlog/Warez fashion with text, pics, videos, etc. And the home page will have pagination too.:)
