XF 2.0 username vs display name

I recently moved a private forum from SMF 2.0 to Xenforo. There were no hiccups, and the users are very excited about the new forum software. One of the features that made our community culture so inviting is that everybody is required to use their real names. This has significantly reduced conflict in our community.

It looks like Xenforo does not come with this feature out of the box. I created a custom field to store the user's real name. How do I swap username for the contents of the display name custom field?

I'm a developer, so I'm not afraid of getting into the code/files and change stuff. I just don't know where to start.

You could modify the template(s) displaying username and change it to:

{$xf.visitor.custom_fields.fieldId}
