XF.CrossTab currently excusively uses LocalStorage as communication backend to synchronize data (like alert counts) between tabs.
This does work but seems a bit awkward as LocalStorage isn't reallly intended for such use and might be blocked for privacy reasons.
It would be great if XenForo could instead use a -
This API is built exactly for such usecases and should be available in most modern browsers; SessionStorage could still be used as a fallback.
