Uploading large images for avatar... loading forever?

Is it just me or is it almost impossible to upload large images (+200kb) as avatar? It keeps loading forever on my installation :s I reduced it to 100kb and it uploaded in a few seconds.

Are there any specific errors if you let it go for a while?

There is a group permission for avatar file size:

Admin CP -> Users -> List User Groups -> [click a group] -> Maximum large avatar file size (bytes)

But it sounds to me like you are running into some kind of server limit. A specific error message might indicate that.

I'm an administrator with no file size limitations. I didn't time it, but it must have been at least 5 minutes of loading with no errors at all. The pixels don't matter, it's just around 200kb or so that it seems to have trouble with it.

Server limit..could be. Not sure what to check for though.

Ok, so I did a few tests...

Original image:


1.280 x 1.024
356 KB

Uploading time: let it load for over one hour, then I gave up.

Next I compressed the JPG to: 100, 120, 130 KB - all uploaded in under 3-4 seconds.

Then I tried 140 KB - this made it load forever again.

Bug or server limit?

I've just uploaded a 4MB image with dimensions of 3488x1744 so it must be a server issue or something related to your install.

Thanks for testing Brogan. Would be good if the software would show me an error, because now you're waiting and left in the dark about what the cause is.
