Trying to add php via admin panel > page options

I am trying to add some simple php code to a page via the admin panel > page options > template HTML input field. However, it will not run the php script it simply posts the script as though it were normal text. I have edited the .htaccess file to allow php script to be run from html but it doesn't help. Any advice on how to get this script running?
