Lots of threads here about the Trophy system not being much use. And honestly I agree, we have been struggling to come up with a way to use it especially as we converted Reactions to the vBulletin Rep and use the ladder titles that way. I think we are going to do something like this but we have to do some of it manually.
Scrap the current Trophy system and convert it to Contests.
Take the existing Question thread type, call it a Contest and put one more option on it for a Close Date. This would set the Pause on voting but still allow comments after voting is done, and automatically set the post with the most votes as the Winner (Solution) and increment the Points by one instead of Solutions by one. Maybe even make the points configurable for each Contest.
Now you can setup some sort of Trophy to go with the Contest. A postbit medal, a tab in profiles. Lots of options there.
EDIT: I am NOT suggesting to get rid of the Questions thread type. Just use that format and add a new Contest thread type.
