XF 2.3 "Trending Content" Widget -- Why Does it Show Old Posts

I just migrated my forum from vbulletin to XenForo (yesterday). I edited the "Trending Content" widget to read "Newest Posts" and I want this section to list the newest posts/content in descending order. I've done searches to try to resolve this, and some answers say to adjust the widget filter (there does not appear to be a widget filter) and others say to set the layout for the main forum page to new posts only. I tried the last one, and I don't want that -- I want the forum index page to present the entire forum as my members have become accustomed to on the old forum version.

Right now it lists a bunch of old posts.

Is there another way to accomplish this? Am I missing something obvious? Thank you!

Edit: I understand that this can be accomplished by clicking on the 'new posts' button. But I like having the visual list present on the main page so that people can just click on the link from there

I’m convinced guests probably bots keep the old posts active.
