Traveling with family to USA

Hello everybody!

I know many of you are from America. I'm planning a trip to USA (East Coast(?)) next summer (2 adults, 4 children) and would like to hear some recommendations from you what to visit, where to stay (not too expensive) etc.

We would like to visit for example some big city and also a country side. We plan to stay for 2 weeks.

We are from Europe and searching also for some cheap flights maybe if anybody has any experience with USA-Europe destination. You know how it goes if you travel with family :)

In our narrow selection in this order:
  1. Toronto and surrounding areas
  2. Chicago, Milwaukee

Can you narrow the destination area down a bit? The US East Coast is actually a pretty huge amount of territory. :barefoot:

I would consider Amtrak for a part of your journey too. Get to see some of America's amazing back country rather then just boring 8 lane rounds driving down the interstate.
 
I made a New England loop on honeymoon (October 2011).

From New York City to Stowe (route 100), then Kancamagus Hwy (missed the Cog Railway at Mount Washington :(), Bangor (Stephen King), Acadia Park and then down to visit some lighthouses (Forrest Gump's included :D) and then Rockport, Salem, Boston, Provincetown, Foxwood Casino, Mystic (Seaport Museum), a couple of farm (example: lymanorchards.com).

But maybe you are planning to stay away from the coast, right?

Actually, impressed about Chicago or somewhere around it.

Just beware that Chicago has the highest murder rate in the country. More murders & shooting victims than New York and Los Angelas combined. Historic Gettysburg,Pa is a nice place to visit. ;) You know....the place where we put a whoopin' on you yanks :D

This is your guider :) I used when I moved from Los Angeles CA to Detroit MI. It helped me a lot I drove with 3 kids :)
Since that time I still use it on every trip.

If you are going to Chicago you will love it even the kids :) Summer will be busy season but you will love it.

If you can rent a car that will be great to explore outside the cities.

Flight from EU to US I used for many years Lufthansa perfect as always.

Isn't like that in all big cities? I mean, of course there are danagerous areas in Chicago, but I think there are in NY too. We will try to avoid locations that are not within the frame of common sense. Also not going our in the evening and night. But yes, I've read about that criminal rate too. But I've heard Detroit is even worse with criminal.

We were also talking about native Americas at home. Are there any museums or anything similar on topic of native Amareicans around Chicago or Milwaukee?

What about Milwaukee? So, Chicago-Milwaukee and countryside trip.

Not for this thread but also looking about Toronto and surrounding area. Is this destination maybe "better" then Chicago?
