Thread SEO changes - Reduce redirects for thread links for SEO purposes

This add-on changes URL generation for to reduce redirections.
This can add-on can cause a few additional read-only queries which fetch the minimum information required.

For robots/guests:
  • Rewrite threads/post links to point to a thread/page#post
  • Disables MultiPrefix's clickable prefixes as this can generate many rewrite links.
For all users:
  • Rewrites goto/post in quotes to link directly to the threads/page#post
  • Rewrite threads/latest links to point to a...

I was wondering if this would help our situation. It doesn't negatively impact us but would be great to resolve. For example in Google Webmaster indexing...

Those two lines are generally 'goto' links, and the redirects are mainly an additional hash Infront of the post id like this.... "/threads/industrie-werken-2015.145512/#post-1439323" which causes a redirect.

Do you think this add-on will resolve these?

Cheers.

It should absolutely help with the goto/post links and it rewrites /threads/industrie-werken-2015.145512/post-1439323 to /threads/industrie-werken-2015.145512/#post-1439323 which saves a redirect too.

I'd love to see more SEO features in this plugin. Even if its for threads only.
There are so many SEO issues to improve and enhances that could help.
I hope this is the first of many features. As you know people are more than willing to spend money on a good SEO addon.

OK, purchased. Is there any settings / permissions etc?
There aren't any configurables, it automatically applies to guests/robots. Logged in users (and emails) get the default behavior as the thread/post links are actually useful when sharing with people.

SEO changes are sadly something of a tarpit, and often disabling features for guests/robots is required to convince search engines to stop following links they shouldn't be.

When installed, the post share url (copy link) is missing the board url. Only /threads/... is visible, also when sharing.

The description is upfront about the limitations that it targets a few known sources of excessive redirects.

I really do need information. What URLs is it reporting? when did you install the add-on? and how do you mean "hasn't worked at all"?

That screenshot doesn't really help, especially when you aren't showing data from the 2025-12-26 to 2026-01-07, aka the last ~2 weeks.

That screenshot definitely does show the data from the last two weeks, seeing as I took the screenshot today. It's one bar per day. As you can see it hasn't gone down at all.

Here's some example urls that haven't been resolved...

The screenshot ends at the 2025-12-26, it is the 2026-01-06 (depending on timezone).

You'll need to inspect some of those URLs to determine the referencing page, then visit them as a guest to see if you can find that link somewhere in the html source.

Please open a ticket so this can be troubleshooted, as I'll need to iteratively ask a bunch of questions and get examples from you

The screenshot doesn't tell me enough information, open a ticket on my site because I need actual information of what google is reporting

The v1.0.13 release fixes a bunch of posts/<post-id> links, but it takes 2-3 weeks for those links to drop out of the search index. That update doesn't touch the threads/<threadId> links.

I did notice user mentions cause additional redirects which is annoying, but will take a lot more work to migrate

The style variation and language chooser also causes huge amounts of bad urls indexed by google.
Don't know if it could fit in this add-on, but worth looking at this also:

Please consider to add support for @Bob's addons. Specifically AMS, UBS, RMS. And XFRM/XFMG.
Google has identified 350K pages with redirects which drains crawl budget. I'd love to get some of that back.

Please consider to add the folowing featurs:
  1. When merging nodes: display the number of views. This prevents moderators from merging a high ranking threads into a low ranking thread.
  2. Batch update threads: Set Allow search engine indexing.
  3. Set Allow search engine indexing for multiple forums.
  4. More flexible criteria for Search engine index criteria

In GSE I see issues with these thread parameters:

Pages with redirect:
/latest/

proxy.php?aff-xxxx&link=spamlinkhere

FYI, but User Essentials implements SEO fixes for @ user mentions and quotes which link to user profiles. This is because it builds a data structure which tracks user mentions & quotes per post so the data is already on hand and doesn't need to generate tons of queries.

I'ld need samples of the URLs, it is sadly a tedious process to identify routes and then craft patches for them. I recommend submitted @Bob add-ons redirect issues to him as reducing redirects for non-logged in users is something he can more easily do.

The client who commissioned this add-on doesn't use XFRM/XFMG so I didn't do them, I'll need to review how much time the initial development of this add-on took as I vaguely remember it was something of a time sink to hunt down all the redirect issues with threads and fix them.

My mod tools improvements add-on already does that.

I'ld need some samples of the source urls and the page they are coming from. This add-on attempts to prevent the threads/latest route from rendering but off-site links will still work which means old crawled urls.

This will be from the XF image proxy service, I'm not sure what todo with that one; maybe an option not render those links for guests/robots?
