thread read marking time preference

Has anyone created a user preference for the duration of a post/thread being marked new.

We currently have the "new" status of content set to 60 days, but some members would rather it were shorter (or maybe longer). Has anyone considered making this a user preference option?

It would require custom development as it's a global setting.

Thanks. I suspected that was the case, but did not want to waste effort on something that had already been done.
