The future of forums (vs social media)

This topic is 8 years old. I'm wondering if anyone has revised their perspectives on forums and XF competing better (or worse) than social media.

There are some great ideas in here, from federating independent communities to new modes of viewing the forum index. Have any of these made their way into the software? Will any of these features help move the needle in 2024?

I feel like the big change is with AI. There are tons of bots indexing our content, and perhaps in the future where normally our forum pages would appear in search results, it may be AI answers instead (that use our content). But there will always be a desire by some to be part of a community. My communities are 22 years old and going pretty strong.

I'd rather a forum than being on social media.
Social media can be full of people you don't really want to interact with.
They always send friend requests and other stuff you just don't want.

My forum is 22 years old now.
Almost 140.000 registered users and growing non stop for more than 2 decades. This year, we are growing a 20%.
The spam is horrible, though. I am working on it and cleaning spammers every single day.

Best thing I ever did was adding Xon's signup and abuse add-on; I have had almost no spam since.
