XF 2.3 template replacement/matching with tabs

I struggled with a working mod on a test site that failed on my production site due to a tab.

the match phrase was wrapped in an additional <xf:if> due to a a template edit which caused the 2nd line to be an additional tab wider.

    me
was

        match
 me

so the expression didn't hit.

Is there a better way around this? i'd like to make this more portable.

When matching for string replacements, do you limit it to one line?

the current 1 liner in question is not unique in the template which makes it hard.
