There isn't much info about this on Google, though it looks like it may be down to how MySQL allocates memory for full text search results, particularly if there is a very large result set. We don't really have any way to prevent this.

If you have a large forum, MySQL's full text search is most definitely lacking, both in features and speed. That's when we recommend Elasticsearch/XF Enhanced Search.
