I've noticed that if you try to upload an Avatar with transparency, the transparent pixels get replaced with black. This happens from time to time on other websites and I've never known why. But I do know that with most other board software, it's more than possible to have Avatars with transparent pixels.

I think the first final release of XenForo should support transparency in avatars. I happen to like that.

Is the avatar in question a PNG? Because then you'd need alpha channel support.

The Avatar I use is a .png, yes, but it seems that any type of image format with transparent pixels gets converted to black upon being uploaded here.
