XF 1.4 Status updates / wall posts

Can someone help me to understand the difference in between Status updates and wall posts.

The Status updates are originally set to 140 letters but when I write on someone else's wall it seems I can write a lot more. Are those two things separated from each other or how does that work?

There are two separate limits; 140 characters for status updates, 420 characters for profile post comments.
