Some jpeg photos missing on Apple devices

I have one user who is saying that on some threads, the occasional photo just shows up as a question mark for them. So on one page some photos will display and some will display a question mark instead. I don't see anything like this myself and only one other member says they have occasionally had that.

So trying to work out what it is. Is it user side or server side? The member uses an ipad and an iphone "a few years old" but not really old. I also use an iphone and I don't get it. So I don't think it's apple specific. The member tried turnng device on and off, clearing cookies. I suggested they install firefox and try browsing with that to see if that fixes it. Haven't had a clear response to that but it suggests that hasn't helped.

So the only thing I can think is their internet (which they say is fne), or something server side that apple picks up? But in that case why don't I see it on apple?

Any ideas?

Looked through some of the images they get as question marks and there's no common pattern - they're all jpg or jpeg just like most of the photos on the site. They're all resized so some aren't larger than others particularly. So there doesn't seem to be anything about the images themselves. Need to ask if they get this on other sites as well. If not then I know it's site specific.

They sent a screenshot. It just looks like a blank space where the photo should be, and in the middle is a very small blue square with a question mark in it. At the top of the space where the photo should be is the jpeg file name. We've ruled out wifi as they get the same thing on work wifi as at home.

So it does seem to be device specific (apple). But I'm a bit stumped as I can't recreate it. The user isn't very tech savvy so not sure they'd work out how to look for a console error message.

Ok so it's a site or server issue. I just checked the particular thread on my iphone, and I'm getting it too. I have no idea how to check the console on an iphone!

Have a sinking feeling about this - a couple of months back, I downloaded all images from the site, removed exif data and re-uploaded them again.....

Checked the image on computer where it displays and browser console error message is

"Layout was forced before the page was fully loaded. If stylesheets are not yet loaded this may cause a flash of unstyled content."

Nope - I don't think that message is relevant. Asked server who says it's not possible to inspect the browser console in safari unless you have a Mac! Which I don't.

So it is only in Safari - not in other browsers. Any suggestions?

Ok - cleared server cache and then cleared cache on iphone and the images display. But that means everyone with an apple device needs to clear their cache! And I'm wondering if this is just a temporary fix.

Server said it might be related to cloudflare as well.

Do you have a sample link that we can see as a guest where this is happening?

It's just been resolved by clearing iphone cache - AFTER clearing server cache. But - I am not sure if this has only resolved it temporarily or not. And it also means all iphone and ipad users on the site need to clear their browsing history! Which is not great.

Replied to you elsewhere, but just wanted to state here that I couldn't replicate the issue on a few different devices with Safari.
As mentioned, it could be something between your members and the server. I didn't see anything abnormal in the developer consoles from my point of view.

Yes, thank you. I had already cleared the server cache so maybe that meant it didn't show for you. After then clearing iphone cache, the images showed up in safari - but NOT in firefox on iphone - or any browser on iphone. So it's an apple thing.

I've just changed the post title slightly to be clear it's on apple devices. Also just wondering if there is a way to resolve this, without all members who use apple devices, having to clear their cookies/cache?

So it's not resolved. That was a temporary fix and it's now happening again and other users are finding half the photos not displaying - because they use iphones and ipads. It must be quite a recent thing as it's only just been brought to my attention.

So I'm back to square one. Apple doesn't like my forum/site. Slight panic if it's messing up the site! I guess I could try turning off the cloudflare app in case it's that.

Ok, thanks. But for it to happen on everyone's devices? Makes me wonder if it's a server or cloudflare issue. Or addon issue. Or - I don't know. Quite a lot of members use iphones and ipads. The images display fine on non apple devices.

I think it might be a server issue. Have asked to speak to an adviser there. The server bot said something about it could be related to recent server-side changes in how images are served (but maybe the bot is just guessing!).

Ok so it's not server side. They had me trying a few things, including pausing cloudflare for a while as he thought it might be aggressive cacheing. Made no difference. They think I need a developer and it may be because exif data was removed from the images and apple's webkit doesn't render them. All images had exif removed about two months ago but it's only just become an issue (maybe an ios update?). The most recent images over the last two months, aren't affected. They also have exif removed at the time of upload but via Xon's addon which I think overwrites them. Apple devices seem to see those.

Bit of a mess as a high proportion of users use apple devices and can't see most of the images. Although it;s only started in the last few days.
