Seriously, it's a minefield but one thing you must do is ensure your site works on 1024px wide.
That seems to be the cut off point for all the major sites.

Just did some research on the stats for folks' screen reso and found that 76% of folks use 1024px or higher. So, I guess my own settings are just a little low here on the laptop :)
