Hello everyone,
Recently, with the increasing coding capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, we see many users trying to develop XenForo add-ons by writing prompts to ChatGPT, Claude, or similar tools. These add-ons, installed with the logic of "Does it work? Yes, it works," might look flawless from the outside, but under the hood, they can turn into a ticking time bomb for your forum.
From the perspective of a XenForo Developer, I wanted to discuss the technical details of the massive gap between an add-on generated purely by AI and one written by a developer who has mastered the architecture. Especially with the transition to XenForo 2.3.x, this gap has become much more dangerous.
1. XenForo 2.3 and the Lack of Current Architecture (The Outdated Dataset Problem)
As you know, with XenForo 2.3, jQuery was completely abandoned in favor of a Vanilla JS (Pure JavaScript) structure. Additionally, significant standard changes were made to the CSS compilation system, icon structure (FontAwesome), and PHP 8.x compatibilities.
- What AI Does: Since its dataset usually stops at XF 2.1 or 2.2, it will give you plenty of jQuery code, outdated xf:js extensions, or old icon classes (<i class="fa-, etc.). The add-on will either not work on XF 2.3 or will throw JavaScript errors in the browser console.
- What a Real Developer Does: They build a performant and compatible structure utilizing XF 2.3's new XF.Element architecture, XF.ajax vanilla requests, and the new Asset management.
2. The Entity System and Database Disasters (The N+1 Query Problem)
The heart of XenForo is the "Entity" and "Finder" system.
- What AI Does: It generally cannot establish complex relations properly. It might have you write raw SQL queries directly using $db->query(), or it might cause the N+1 query problem by making you use em()->find() inside a loop. Every time you refresh the page, 500 unnecessary SQL queries run in the background, and your server's load spikes.
- What a Real Developer Does: They set up database relations perfectly. Using eager loading techniques like ->with('Profile', 'Privacy') within the Finder structure, they fetch all the required data with a single, optimized SQL query.
3. Security Vulnerabilities and Input Filtering
This is the most critical point. XenForo has very strict rules for filtering external data (Input Filtering).
- What AI Does: It tries to filter incoming data with standard $_POST or general PHP security functions (htmlspecialchars, etc.). It might forget XSRF (CSRF) token checks. By skipping user permission checks (\XF::visitor()->hasPermission(...)), it can leave backdoors (permission vulnerabilities) that allow a member to perform actions requiring admin privileges.
- What a Real Developer Does: They always fetch data using the $this->filter('field_name', 'str') methodology. Before executing the action in the Controller, they strictly use lifecycle validators such as assertRegistrationRequired() and assertAdminPermission(). They build the security wall according to XenForo standards.
4. MVC Lifecycle and Business Layers (Repository/Service)
Where you perform an action in XenForo is at least as important as
how you do it.
- What AI Does: It dumps all the add-on's data, database saving processes, and email sending into the Controller (Spaghetti Code). This makes the code unreadable and unusable for future reuse.
- What a Real Developer Does: They delegate bulk database queries to Repositories, complex business logic like thread creation to Service classes (XF\Service), and processes that will run slowly in the background (e.g., bulk mailing, image processing) to the Job/Cron system.
5. Language (Phrase) and Template (XML) Errors
- What AI Does: It embeds texts like "Login" or "Submit" directly into the Template files as "Hardcoded" strings. Translating the add-on to another language or modifying theme properties becomes impossible. It might mix up Admin and Public templates.
- What a Real Developer Does: They input all texts into the phrases.xml file located in the XML _data directory and call them within the template using {{ phrase('addon_name_example') }}. The add-on is fully multilingual-supported and respects XF Style Properties.
In Summary: Artificial intelligence is a fantastic assistant when writing code. It can solve an algorithm you're stuck on, inspire you, or help you write regex. However, someone without a full grasp of the architecture installing an AI-generated XenForo add-on is like handing the keys of a Formula 1 car to someone without a driver's license. The car might go very fast, but it will crash into the wall at the first corner.
For the sake of your system's security, data integrity, and server performance, approach add-ons from uncertain sources with caution. A real developer's XF experience is not just about "making the code work"; it's about ensuring the code works "safely, without exhausting the system, and in line with the XenForo philosophy." It also means long-term support and updates.
Final Words and an Important Warning:
Just because an add-on "works" doesn't mean it is secure and sustainable. Whether it was written by AI or created by someone inexperienced, any add-on with an uncertain origin is a risk to your forum.
Never forget these three golden rules when choosing an add-on:
- Support and Sustainability: In the event of a possible XenForo update (e.g., upgrading from XF 2.3 to 2.4), will you have a point of contact if this add-on throws an error? AI can provide an instant solution but cannot offer long-term technical support.
- Code Quality and Review: Not every released add-on should be used directly in a production environment. The add-on's references, the developer's past work, and how strictly they adhere to coding standards must definitely be considered.
- Continuity of Updates: PHP versions, database infrastructures, and server architectures are constantly updated. Add-ons that are not backed up and are created with an "I wrote it, and it's done" mindset will quickly cause your forum to break.
For the security of your system, data integrity, and most importantly, the peace of mind of your members, choose professional developers who guarantee technical support, closely follow XenForo updates, and respect the architecture.
Thank you for reading. We can discuss your questions below this thread.
