XF 1.2 SMF Users to XenForo Users

I would like to somehow take all my SMF users and import them to XenForo.
What is the best way to do this?

I imagine just doing something with MySQL?

You will need to use an importer of some sort.
As there is no direct SMF importer, you will need to do a double import: SMF -> phpBB -> XF

Now I've never done an import, do I lose the SMF installation completely during it or no?

The original installation is unaffected.

Use a backup of the database if you like, so there's no connection to the live DB at all.
