XF 2.0 Site slowing to a crawl and spamming php slowlog with job.php queries

MySQL ProcessList shows a ton of queries (80+) along these lines

Restarting php solves the problem, but only temporarily

This may be related to this bug report, a fix provided by @Xon in that thread on page 2 seems to solve it for most users.
