Separate Admin and Regular Accounts

Hey everyone,

I have a simple question, should I have two separate accounts: one with full admin privileges called "Administrator" and another for general activities like uploading resources and such? Or is it better to use just one account for everything? What do you advise? How do you have it set up on your board?

Thanks!

IT best practice is to keep them separate but for a small, non-commercial site, not sure it is really necessary as long as you have a secure login and MFA enabled. I currently do have a separate admin account but I am also an IT manager in my day job so tend to stick to best practices even with side projects like being a site admin.

Considering how many admins have been locked out over the years due to only having one account, or using the main admin account which is also a moderator and has hard delete privileges and content has been permanently deleted, I would say don't use user ID 1 for day to day and keep it as the primary admin and moderator account only.

Create another regular admin account with moderator privileges, without hard delete capability, and use that.

Or if you prefer to use ID 1 for yourself (as most site owners do), create another super admin account and remove the permissions from yours.

I am NOT "user1" on my forum....many MANY years ago I "moved" to a different account user. At the time, it was assumed that user1 was the admin, had admin privileges, and would be the #1 target for hackers. Member 224xxx registered today, so a hacker would have some work to do :)

My forum has 3 admin accounts (mine, my daughters, and my sysadmin) as well as a few "test" accounts. All have password and 2FA requirements.

Nice thinking! Maybe it's better not be user 1 after all

I have ID 1 as its own thing and only use it occasionally for things like promotion and demotion of admin accounts. I have my own separate admin account for day-to-day work. Then there's my actual user account for posting. The other admin uses the same setup.
