XF 2.1 Searching by custom fields returns no records

Hello,
We have a problem with using the custom fields:
Searches in the ACP using many of the custom fields return no record.
I can see the details in the DB AND in the user profile on the site --In other words, THEY EXIST-- but I can not get the results via ACP.
I've tried generating email lists, sending alerts and trying to batch update users, but it just does not work.

Any Idea what could be the problem?

I don't think you can search by custom field unfortunately.

Are you sure?
Searching for users via the ACP using custom fields - does return records.
In fact, on a new setup (installing XF locally) there doesn't seem to be any problem.

Moreover, my co-worker (who's been working on the site for a few years already. I've been here for a couple of months) is adamant it was possible in the past...

Sorry. User custom fields yes. I was thinking of custom thread fields.
