Replacing xen:links by template hook?

Is it possible to replace a {xen:link} in a template via template hook?
I tried it...without success.
So created a new template and replaced the link. This new template is activated on 'template_create'.
But perhaps there is a possibility without creating a new template?

The hook system has been deprecated.
You should use a template modification instead.
