XF 1.5 Remove IP addresses for specific user

A customer has requested for his personal information to be deleted, in line with the Data Protection Act 2018 (this is the Act that meets the GDPR under the requirements of UK law).

I cannot however see how to clear his IP addresses; I do not want to delete his account as we do not do this because of the disruption this can cause.

I can't remember if this is changed since XF 1.5 but in XF 2.x this is very easy to do.

AdminCP >> Users >> Search for user

Then at the top right you'll see:

199657

Clicking on Delete takes you to the next screen:

199658

Use the Rename user option (you can enter whatever you wish to replace the default). The actual user will be deleted along with all his personal information but the posts will remain so your threads aren't disrupted.

Hi, thanks for reply

I can do this but don’t believe that it’s the right thing to do as it disrupts the natural flow of the forum, and so prefer to just update username and delete personal detail.

But arguably the username is personal information. I suspect your user would object if he knew you intended to leave his posts attributed to his username. For one thing, many people on forums tend to use the same online identity from one forum to another.

But if you insist on keeping it, I suppose you could delete the user and then change the name from "Member number XXX" back to his original username. That will delete his email and (I think) his IP addresses at least.

If you do that, though, prepare for a complaint to the UK version of the GDPR commission.

That is why we change their username to something anonymous, of their choosing. It is possible to delete all personal data, except for IP addresses which is what I want to do.

GDPR is NOT the law of the land, that is the Data Protection Act 2018 which I am (trying to be) compliant with.

The British government has vowed to continue with the GDPR folded into law even if --- as is becoming increasingly less likely due to the astounding incompetence of the British parliament to which the poor old brexiteers think powers should be repatriated [ the same people who couldn't work this out in 3 years... ] --- we leave the EU.

Nonetheless, the terror of ICO is a little dampened by the fact that according to the dear old Reg, they so far have bungled following their own design...

Jon Baines, a data protection advisor at Mischon de Reya, said on his personal blog that he was "well-and-truly-gobsmacked" at the admission the ICO hasn't "prepared, let alone given, its own staff a GDPR privacy notice".
